Glaucoma and Laser Surgery

Certain factors can cause poor drainage of aqueous fluids in the eye and this results in the build up of pressure which can cause damage to the optic nerves that helps the eye function for vision. This leads to an eye disease called glaucoma and if left untreated, it can cause permanent loss of vision. Through the years many techniques and procedures have been developed to diagnose and treat it and at this time the most promising solution is glaucoma laser surgery.
Glaucoma comes in different forms and determining what type of glaucoma a patient has helps in determining what treatment options there are. Initially, in an attempt to relieve pressure in the eye, doctors give eye drops and medication taken orally are given. If it does not help, then glaucoma laser surgery is the next option.
Argon laser trabeculoplasty is one form of glaucoma laser surgery technique used primary open angle glaucoma. Tiny burns are made into the trabecular network of the eyes to improve the draining and flow of aqueous fluid in the eyes. A specific form of this procedure is selective laser trabeculoplasty or SLT. This uses laser beams to remove only very specific target cells in the trabecular network. As a result, it improves the flow of aqueous fluids and relieves the pressure.
In some cases, it may take two sessions and in some, it may require repeating the procedure after two or three years. This, however is recommended because it avoids the need for medication after the procedure. It is also the glaucoma laser surgery procedure commonly recommended for pigmentary glaucoma which is common among males of African-American descent.
Angle closure glaucoma results if the space or angle between the iris and cornea is too narrow and this results in poor drainage of aqueous fluids. Peripheral iridotomy is the glaucoma laser surgery option for this type.
To relieve the pressure, laser beams are used to make a small hole on the iris. The space or angle widens as the iris moves away from it. This corrects the flow of aqueous fluids.
For more severe cases of glaucoma, the procedure usually recommended is laser cyclophotocoagulation. An example is when new blood vessels are formed in the eye as a result of diabetic retinopathy. The new blood vessels can seriously affect the flow of aqueous fluids in the eye resulting in pressure buildup. This leads to a form of glaucoma called neovascular glaucoma.
For this glaucoma laser surgery procedure, the doctor uses endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation to observe the ciliary body. This is also connected to an endoscopic camera. This will then guide the application of the laser beam to treat the ciliary body so it reduces or stops the production of fluids. By using a laser beam, part of the ciliary body is destroyed so that it no longer produces aqueous fluid. Less aqueous fluid means less pressure on the eye.
These glaucoma laser surgery procedures are usually painless. Some may feel a slight stinging sensation but apart from that, no major pain is felt. After undergoing glaucoma laser surgery, some rest for a few days is required and soon one can go back to the normal daily routine.
Also, in some cases, the patient needs to take some medication to relieve some minor discomforts that may appear after the procedure. Eye inflammation and slight risks in developing cataract may be some of the problems that may arise after each glaucoma laser surgery.
Glaucoma is a serious problem that can lead to permanent damage to the eye. It is important that it is well-understood and that a number of techniques are available to treat it.

Education Path For a Criminal Lawyer

The legal system plays a fundamental role in protecting the rights of individuals. Working in the legal profession is often viewed as a lucrative and rewarding career. The test is designed to assess an applicant’s propensity for practicing law.
3.) Acceptance by most law schools depends on the applicant’s LSAT scores, the applicant’s undergraduate school’s standing in the education community, and prior work or volunteer experience. There may also be a personal interview. Once accepted into law school, there is three years of intensive study. At the end of the three years, one will acquire a law degree. Law school graduates receive the degree of juris doctor. (J.D.) Generally, one cannot work as an attorney until taking and passing the bar exam. Each state has its own bar exam. Graduates will need to pass the bar exam in the state(s) where they intend to practice law. After passing the bar exam, a license to practice law will be granted, and one can begin to practice criminal law in that state. A person must be licensed to practice law in the courts of any state or other criminal field. Many states also require applicants to pass a separate written ethics examination. Graduate lawyers usually begin their careers as associates working with experienced criminal lawyers or trial judges.

Some Basic Facts
Reverse home loans are available for seniors who are at least 62 years old and live in their primary residence. Remember, this a primary residence loan only. It won’t work on second homes or investment properties. It won’t work if you want to move into a retirement or assisted living facility.
When getting this loan, you have the option to choose different payment methods. You can receive a lump sum amount, monthly regular checks, or a line of credit. Repayment with interest will only be required if you sell your home, you move to another place permanently, or if you pass away.

It becomes deductible only when the loan is call due for any reason.
The upfront expenses and the interest are normally added to the loan. Basically, you are not paying for these items out of pocket. So according to the IRS, the expenses are not actually being paid, therefore no deduction. This is the reason why they can not become tax deductible. They can become deductible once the reverse mortgage matures or is call due and payable. Maturity of this loan could mean that the last borrower has died, moved into a retirement facility, or the property has been sold. The loan can be called due if you move permanently to another home. Of course, one always get another “backwards” mortgage on the new property as well since it now becomes the primary residence once there is enough equity.
Reverse mortgages are known by other names. It is also called as the home equity conversion mortgage or the reverse annuity mortgage. The best thing about these types of mortgage, regardless of the name you use, is that you are not required to produce documents about income history or credit rating. As long as you have the equity to your home and you are at least 62 years old, then you may qualify for the reverse loan.

Alzheimer’s Disease Research – A Simple, Easy Way to Avoid Alzheimer’s Disease

For a long time the mechanisms through which some people contracted Alzheimer’s disease AD) was a mystery. They knew that there was some kind of genetic link because it tended to run in families, but beyond that, no one knew.
Now, Alzheimer’s disease research has made it possible to paint a much clearer picture. We now know that there are both genetic and environmental factors involved. We also know that the precursors to the disease begin appearing decades before Alzheimer’s symptoms become evident, much like HIV appears years before AIDS develops.
We don’t yet have as clear a marker for the beginnings of AD as HIV is to AIDS, but Alzheimer’s disease research is working on it. Researchers are currently pursuing and validating several promising precursor markers. They also continue to identify and clarify various environmental factors that play a part.
There are both positive indicators that identify elements associated with those who do not get Alzheimer’s and negative indicators associated with those that do. For Alzheimer’s disease prevention then, it would seem that all we have to do is use and adopt the positive and avoid the negative factors.
An example of a negative indicator could be major tooth loss. People who have lost more than 1/3 of their teeth are at a significantly higher risk for Alzheimer’s and other dementias than those who have retained most of their teeth. So we brush and floss, visit a dentist regularly, take care of our teeth and keep them.
There are many positive factors, too many to go into here, but a good, strong example would be by maintaining the level of Vitamin B-12 in your bloodstream at 600 to 2,000 pg/ml. [In the U.S. the averages are generally much lower. Japan's "normal" range is 500-1,300 which may explain why Japan has such a low rate of AD.]
By way of background, mammals, including humans, are born with serum levels of vitamin B12 at about 2,000 pg/ml (picograms–i.e., trillionths of a gram, per milliliter). The level declines throughout human life for various reasons, some known, others guessed at, many unknown.
Dr. John V. Dommisse, who practices medicine in Tucson, Arizona, wrote an article in 1991 in Medical Hypotheses in which he maintained that most cases of Alzheimer’s dementia are actually missed B12 deficiency cases. He later reported that Alzheimer’s disease appeared to result from too-low serum vitamin B12.
Replenishing the vitamin succeeded in improving patients in spite of other risk factors. Repleting B12, according to Dommisse, can reverse 75% of B12 deficiency dementias when the condition is discovered early enough.
More recent research has put a finer point on it. For example, in Preventive Medicine Update (May 1995), Jeffrey Bland, PhD reported, “…a wide range of very important clinical outcomes from improving folate/B12/B6 status, cutting across neurological and arterial functional status.”
Which ties in to the correlation between high levels of homocysteine and AD. Reducing your level of homocysteine also makes you less likely to get AD. Folates and other B-vitamins will reduce your homocysteine levels rapidly and economically. B-12 is cheap, available in a number of forms.(See below for more on this.)
So, to summarize that area of Alzheimer’s disease research, the bottom line is, a simple but effective step for Alzhemer’s prevention is to get your levels of B-12 and homocysteine checked. Then take B-12, folates and other B-vitamins to raise your serum B-12 and lower your homocystein, to positive, anti-AD ranges.
